Wedding Service for
_______________ and ________________
[Date]

INTRODUCTION

Dear Friends,

We have come here today, in the presence of God, to witness the joining together of __________ and ___________ in marriage.

Marriage is a very honourable estate, because it symbolizes the union between Christ and the Church; and because it was at a wedding that Christ performed His first miracle, when He turned the water into wine in Cana in Galilee.

So today we honor the love that you, ___________ and you, ____________ have discovered in each other, and we support your decision to promise yourselves to one another for the rest of your lives. It is said that one does not fall in love, but grows in love.  And now we celebrate this love, which draws you towards a lasting commitment, one to the other, creating a new family and an inseparable bond.

The following is a reading from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians:

Love is patient and kind; love is never jealous; love is not boastful or conceited, it is never rude and never seeks its own advantage, it does not take offense or store up grievances.  Love does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but finds its joy in the truth.  It is always ready to make allowances, to trust, to hope and to endure whatever comes.  Love never comes to an end.  Faith, hope and love endure, these three alone, but the greatest of these is love.

Marriage is a relationship entered into thoughtfully, and reverently, with gratitude for the past and hope for the future.  It is an occasion which is both solemn, as we reflect on the seriousness of your decision, and festive, as we share your joy.  The covenant of marriage is one that can be entered into only by persons who are both legally and spiritually free to offer themselves to one another.  Whereas the future is unknown to any of us, your love and trust for one another will make possible the act of faith you now make to each other.

THE QUESTIONS

I now ask the following questions of ____________ and ____________:

Groom:

Do you take this woman to be your lawful wedded wife,
To live together according to God’s plan in the holy estate of Matrimony?
Will you love her, comfort her, honor her and keep her
In sickness and in health;
And, forsaking all others,
Keep yourself only for her,
So long as you both shall live?

Groom:  I do.

Bride:

Do you take this man to be your lawful wedded husband,
To live together according to God’s plan in the holy estate of Matrimony?
Will you love him, comfort him, honor him and keep him
In sickness and in health;
And, forsaking all others,
Keep yourself only for him,
So long as you both shall live?

Bride:  I do.

THE VOWS

I will now ask __________ and ___________ to repeat after me their wedding vows:

Groom:  I, ____________,
Take you, _____________
To be my lawful wedded wife,
To have and to hold
From this day forward,
For better for worse,
For richer, for poorer,
In sickness and in health,
To love and to cherish,
Till death do us part,
According to God’s holy Will.

Bride:  I, ____________,
Take you, _____________
To be my lawful wedded husband,
To have and to hold
From this day forward,
For better for worse,
For richer, for poorer,
In sickness and in health,
To love and to cherish,
Till death do us part,
According to God’s holy Will.

THE EXCHANGE

Let these rings which you are about to exchange serve as a reminder of your unending faith and constant commitment.  They are tokens of the growing relationship you have come here today to confirm.  As emblems of eternity, these wedding rings seal the vows of marriage as a signature bears witness to a written covenant.

As a symbol of this covenant, _____________, place the ring on ____________’s finger and repeat after me:

Groom:  With this ring I Thee wed,
With my body I Thee honor,
And all my worldly goods with Thee I share:
In the Name of the Father,
              And of the Son,
              And of the Holy Spirit
              Amen.

As a symbol of this covenant, _____________, place the ring on ____________’s finger and repeat after me:

Bride:    With this ring I Thee wed,
With my body I Thee honor,
And all my worldly goods with Thee I share:
In the Name of the Father,
             And of the Son,
             And of the Holy Spirit
             Amen.

Inspirational Message

Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be shelter for the other.

Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth to the other.

Now you are two persons, but there is only one life before you.

Go now, enter into the rest of the days of your life... TOGETHER

THE PRAYER

O God our Father,
The Maker of all mankind, and the Giver of all good gifts,
We pray that You will send Your Blessings onto _____________ and ___________
So that they may always keep the vow and the covenant they have just made
(of which the rings given and received are a sign)
and so that they may always live together in perfect love and peace-
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Poem:

It’s the start of something wonderful
The chance to start anew
A brand new life lies waiting
That’s tailor made for two
It’s a beautiful beginning full of romance and delight
As you start each day with kisses
Share embraces through the night
There is so much to discover
So much fun you’ve yet to share
Lots of really great adventures
And many new ways to show you care
There’s a future full of happiness
And more magic for you too
And it all begins to happen with those magic words “I Do”

I am going to ask you both a series of very important questions, at the end of which you both are to answer “I DO”.

Marriage is a journey.  You will not always be able to choose the route that you will take or the circumstances along the way; but you have chosen one another.  May this journey together bring you much satisfaction, contentment, and happiness, this marriage journey that begins today.

Blessing

Lord God, let us give thanks for the moment that brings _____________ and ___________ together in marriage.  We recognize with thanksgiving, the journeys that have brought them to this time, and we celebrate with them the hopes they hold for their life together.  We ask your blessing upon them, to sustain them through the difficult and uncertain times that come to every relationship.  We pray that they may continue to find in each other resources, which will mature their marriage.  May they continue to grow together, and may their love for one another deepen with the passing years.

Nautical Message

May you be each other’s navigator in the course of life’s voyages, and each other’s anchor in the rough seas that may lie ahead, so that through this journey your love may have the strength of the powerful sun, which can break away any dark cloud that may come your way.  And as each other’s mate for life, may you be at the helm of your own and each other’s destiny.  Go now in peace, and live more in the present, which is beautiful and stretches away beyond the limits of the past and towards the horizons of a beautiful future.

 Pronouncement

If Children are involved

"The lighting of the center candle represents not only the union of  ____________ and _____________ in marriage, but the unity formed in this new family which your lives will now shine as one family."
